Are we expected to believe that Johns would seriously bin one of his best ideas?įourth(ly?), Manhattan showing Superman other versions of himself is really quite funny, you know what with him having an adventure in Multiplicity where he met ALL OF THEM. Thirdly, Superboy-Prime being Mr Oz has some validity but the reasoning is absolute horse shit.JOHNS WAS THE ONE WHO TURNED HIM INTO A VILLAIN IN THE FIRST PLACE! Not only that but he featured him in other works too, Legion of 3 Worlds, Green Lantern and then Blackest Night. If DC were going to renumber comics they would have done it alongside Action and Detective Comics last year. This seems to be a wish fulfilment thing based on Marvel's Legacy numbering strategy. Secondly i don't buy the renumbering/renaming thing. He's a) obsessed with Superman b) mysterious and talks in riddles c) likes to hide behind the scenes. In fact the one thing you can say for certain with Mr Oz is that his characterisation has not changed one bit since his introduction. I'm sorry but i don't buy this, it just doesn't ring true.įirst of all, the idea of Mr Oz being a mysterious villain with no long term plans for Rebirth just doesn't ring true whatsoever, mainly because Mr Oz was NOT a villain in Johns' Superman run at all. Marvel just seems to double down on their own mistakes and completely ignore why stuff like Rebirth is winning people over. The difference between current Marvel and current DC in terms of comics is DC is learning from past mistakes, and are willing to admit it. The New 52 had some failures, but Rebirth has been well on the road to fixing those (everything Superman, reintroduction of pre-Flashpoint Wally, and them working on Tim Drake's character and potentially setting up something big with him).
Thanks to the New 52, among other things we've got some great new additions to Batman lore (Court of Owls, DotF, Zero Year), Aquaman is being used to his full potential, and Justice League has had some popular arcs like Throne of Atlantis, Forever Evil, and Darkseid War. There were some missteps, sure, but there's been a ton of great stuff to come out of post-Flashpoint DC. Honestly, the whole point of the Rebirth was not just the return of classic characters, but a Rebirth of what makes comics so great.
